Speakeasies, Hangovers, and Skipping Rope

18:50 – Feb. 4th, 2016 – Bodega Hostel, Bangkok

Horrible hangover today.

Yesterday we went shopping at Terminal 21, and I bought a used iPhone 5S at the “IT Mall” for about 9,000 Bhat.  After getting a Thai SIM card, we stopped in at Robinson and bought some skipping ropes.  I also bought some new clippers to replace the ones I melted on account of the voltage difference.

We were walking down Sukhumvit skywalk by the “BTS” AKA ‘book that shit’ or ‘big time spender’.  I don’t actually know what it stands for.  It’s a skytrain.  We walked down the skywalk and I’m all like “Ah man I think my bag is leaking”.  All this after dealing with getting me a new phone and such, Chris gives me the “Come ON man!”.  We both laughed, and it has become one of many catchphrases for even the most minor of annoyances on the trip.  Misery loves company.

We went down to street level and went to hail a taxi to bring us to Khao San Road to meet one of Chris’ Canadian friends.  After inching in traffic for about 10 minutes, we found out the ETA was about an hour.  We said f’ it and hopped out of the taxi.  At this point we found Hilary 3.  While only joked about in legend, seeing it in the flesh was truly fate.  We stopped in this mediocre bar for a pint.  This was the third Hilary we had been to now, and we joked about finding Hilary 4.  The female bartender spoke really good English and was controlling the music with Virtual DJ.  For some odd reason in this bar there is a framed grad photo of a Thai woman on the wall.  It turns out that this is the owner.  Weird juxtaposition.

We end up getting kebab at the same food vendor as the last night through pure co-incidence.  We then walked back to Bodega and started drinking.  We dominated again at beer pong.  I completed the hostel’s ‘beer bong challenge’ in 1.8 seconds on my first try and made it on the top 10 on the first try.  I’m not sure if I should be concerned or proud, but I’ll go with the latter.

We had some drinks and then at 12:00 AM we decided to go to Glow nightclub.  The music was terrible, but it closed 25 minutes later and we befriended the DJ and got the scoop on the afterhours bars.  We went to a place called ‘Mustache Bar’.

Mustache Bar was tight, lots of young professional expats from The West.  A famous transgender Asian model came with us in the cab, and she hired Chris to do some marketing for her on social media.  She was actually quite beautiful, I had no idea she was transgender.  That was a new experience for me.

We got a bottle of Black Label and then left the club at 5 AM and snuck the bottle out for later.  We ate a 7-11 hotdog that was sliced up and put in a plastic bag with a toothpick to eat the individual little slices.  This is how they do it in Asia–no buns.

We caught a cab home.  The guy didn’t know how to get us back, Chris’ phone died, and I passed out in the back of the cab.  Somehow he was able to get us back.

We woke up at 9:30 AM today from the movement of people in our dorm getting up to seize the day and see the sights of Bangkok.  We lay in bed, still a little bit drunk from last night.  Instead of going back to bed, we decided to do a workout and ‘sweat it out’.

Poor decision.

The hangover kicked in immediately after the workout.  We used the two skipping ropes we bought at Robinson AKA “Row Bin-San” and did some interval workouts.  I skipped rope, while Chris did high knees.  He sprained his right wrist last night attempting to do a handstand at the club last night.  We finished off with a core workout.

The hangover was immense.  We laid on the fake grass (It’s really popular in Thailand) across the hostel alley, and just died a little.  Chris went upstairs to throw up, and I just laid on the cold floor in our air conditioned dorm–feeling awful.

I showered, and then after that we just took forever to get moving.

We asked “Jah” where we could find a good coffee shop, and he gave us some directions.  Our brains were not really functioning, so we got lost immediately.  We just kind of wandered around until we saw a nice place called “homework”.  Seemed to fit the bill of a place to get things done.  We ordered some food, did some errands on the computer, and watched a few episodes of The Eric Andre Show while recovering from the hangover.

Bangkok is cool.
